A bluegrassy folk and indie-rap mash-up at the most scenic venue in the state? Why not?

A pairing of two different musical worlds will take place on shared home territory June 29 when Trampled by Turtles and Atmosphere co-headline the scenic Bayfront Festival Park in TBT’s hometown of Duluth.  While they both get a ton of 89.3 the Current airplay and have played some of the same big festivals around the country, the two bands have pretty distinctive audiences from each other, with Trampled boasting a folky Americana-loving audience and jam-band fans, and Atmosphere pretty well indie-rap fans.  Can’t help but wonder what kind of collaboration they might be able to pull off (and yes, that’s a direct challenge to them). Credit goes to First Avenue – which has a long history with each of them – for bringing them together and promoting the show.  What a great place for them to stage the pairing, too, arguably the best outdoor venue in the state.  Concerts in Bayfront Park are always all-ages, and kids under 12 even can even get in free with parents (as is stipulated by the city).  [Chris Riemenschneider, 4/22/13]

(Duluth Balloon Festival)

For the first time in 120 years hot air balloons will decend on Duluth, Minnesota in Bayfront Festival Park.  From 1893-1903 Hot Air Balloons were a regular fixture as part of Duluth’s Independence Day Celebrations.  In 1893, 16,000 spectators came out for the annual festival located at the Pavillion on top of Duluth’s incline station.

120 Years later, Kernz & Kompany, in conjunction with the Duluth Airshow, are proud to re-launch this family event at Bayfront Festival Park FREE to the region for three (3) days, September 20-21-22, 2013.

The Duluth Balloon Festival will feature 12 Hot Air Balloons.  Activities will include: Grand Launch (weather permitting), Tethered Hot Air Balloon Rides, Launching/Recovery of Weather Balloons, hands on activities by NASA, National Weather Service (NOAA), Concert by the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and much more.

Come skate at the City of Duluth’s premier outdoor skating rink, Bayfront Park.  Surrounded by 20-30 foot tall pine trees, Bayfront skating is a wonderful experience.  Come in from the cold and warm up near the fireplace in the Bayfront Family Center.  Bayfront Park skating hours are 5:00-9:00 p.m. until December 26th.

During the holiday break, Bayfront will be open December 27-31 from 1:00-8:00 p.m. and closed on January 1st.  On January 2nd, Bayfront will be open weekly Monday-Friday, 4:00-8:00 p.m., Saturday 1:00-8:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Nearly 3 million lights will illuminate Bayfront Festival Park this holiday season.  Highlighting the 2012 Bentleyville Tour of Lights is an 8-foot-wide ball with 28 3-foot LED blue spikes placed at the top of the 12-story tall steel Christmas tree in the center of Bayfront Festival Park.  Laden with over 60,000 sparkling LED lights the 120 ft. giant tree will be shining brightly in the crisp evening sky.  Synchronized to music, this LED trimmed Christmas tree will dance with images to holiday tunes throughout the season.

Visitors will also be greeted by the spectacular Bentleyville castle which stands 24-feet high and 78-feet long and the Cookie House where visitors are welcome to complimentary hot chocolate, coffee and cookies as they stroll through the park.

A lighted tunnel leads to Santa, 15 fire pits for roasting marshmallows and the Polar Popcorn Hut.

Bentleyville Tour of Lights is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization.  The community mission of this event is to raise non-perishable food items and new unwrapped toys for families in need.  Bentleyville Tour of Lights is an official drop-off site for the Salvation Army.

The Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College is holding the Fall Concert at Bayfront Park for the FDLTCC Foundation to raise money for scholarships that are awarded to local students.

Indigenous is well-known in the Blues Community and Native Country.  The lead guitarist, Mato Nanji is a Native American musician from South Dakota.  From his early career beginning in 1999, Indigenous has managed to be the only Native American Blues band to make the Billboard Charts at #22.  Indigenous has also played The Conan O’Brien Show, CBS Morning show, Austin City Limits and many festivals nationwide including the Bay front Blues Festival.  They have also played alongside great Blues musicians like BB King, Buddy Guy and Johnny Lang.  Mato’s guitar playing has been compared to the greats like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carlos Santana and Jimi Hendrix.

Fly a kite, pet a goat, get to know the St. Louis River or Lake Superior.  Listen to music and treat yourself to handmade craft items.  Eat something fresh and healthy (or maybe just a little bit indulgent). The Tribute Fest was set up to raise awareness and funds for homeless veterans in the state of Minnesota.  Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV) is a nonprofit organization that has been assisting veterans for over 21 years, helping over 5,500 veterans and their families.  It is estimated that 1% of the veterans in this state, or close to 4,100, will experience an episode of homelessness this year.  MACV is there to assist!

Start Time:  Races start promptly at 6:00 p.m. beginning with the Courage Duluth wheelchair division (when offered) followed by the youngest age group and ending with the oldest children.
